From the School Counselor

 Welcome Back!

We have some new things going on in the high school. Our schedule looks slightly different and we have added a new literacy hour in the morning. This new schedule will be completely mapped out for all students in the first few days of school. No worries! See you in August!

A New Face: When you arrive there will be an additional person working in the counseling office. Please help me welcome Mrs. Jankovsky to Calhan High School. Mrs. Jankovsky is working on her internship for school counseling and will be serving our high school and elementary in many different capacities. She is a welcome asset!

SENIORS: The time is here for you to seriously begin to finalize your plans for after high school.  It is O.K. to not know exactly what you want to do; but, it is important that you plan to do something.  Many of you will be going on to college or some form of specialized schooling.

I encourage all college bound seniors to register for Senior Seminar class this year if they haven’t already. This class is especially designed for seniors to prepare them for post secondary options. Come join me and Mrs. Kanuch in getting ready for the real world.

Here are some of the things you should be doing this fall:

·         Register for and take the ACT or SAT

·         Pare down your college list to 4 or 5 schools

·         Obtain college applications and apply

·         Explore scholarship opportunities and financial aid options

·         Visit campuses…so so important to get a feel for the school

·         Listen and ask questions of college reps. that visit the Senior Seminar class

·         Go to college fairs around the area, dates and times will follow when I get them.

JUNIORS: You should be gathering information and formulating some plans for after high school.  Identify your own strengths, weaknesses, goals and values.  Then, see what is out there.  Here are some thoughts:

SOPHOMORES AND FRESHMEN: Study, study, study!!  Get the best grades you can, and get involved with school activities.  Get the most out of high school.  It will be over before you know it.  Sophomores may want to take the PLAN or PSAT tests to see what the ACT and SAT tests are like.

Keep your Brain Working!!
